Hamka and The Employment of Prophetic History's Highlights and Lessons for His Social Approach: An Analytical Study in "Tafsir Al-Azhar"

The main issue that this paper aims to discover is the employment of Prophetic history’s highlights and lessons for social approach by Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah (HAMKA) in his exegetical work “al-Azhar”, through his explanation of the verses related to Prophetic events. The selection of HAMKA as the sample of study due to his great deal with social issues in his exegesis with the objective of guiding and reforming society; and the selection of Prophetic history as the subject of study because the reflection on Prophetic history is a necessary source for the preachers and social reformers to convey the reformation message in effective manner, and to actualize the success of the movement. Consequently, the study of HAMKA's method in this field is particularly significant as it will be a model of the realistic and living approach to take advantage of the Prophet's guidance in reforming and changing society. This study is based on the inductive method to trace HAMKA’s biography, and the meaning of social approach (al-Manḥaj al-Ijtimā’ī) in Qur’ānic exegesis; and the analytical method to discover HAMKA's application models of the social approach in his exegesis, and the manifestations of HAMKA’s employment of the highlights and lessons from Prophetic history for social approach. The researchers found that HAMKA is very concern about the employment of the Prophetic history’s highlights and lessons in his social approach. The manifestations of that employment are: reforming the community's belief, enhancing the community’s attitude, guiding the community to the jurisprudence rulings derived from the Prophetic events, bringing out Prophetic history’s highlights and lessons for social life, alerting the community to modern challenges, and linking Prophetic history’s highlights and lessons with national issues. The study concluded that HAMKA succeeded in placing the Prophetic history in its position as one of the primary resources for social reform.
